"Uptown & Hippies" Walking Tour

Service Description

Irma's walk of City Hall & the Financial District--Mod Toronto-- has proved to be so popular, she's taking the show uptown! Walkers will begin at the north-east corner of Bloor St. E. and Church, where they'll learn about sculptor Kosso Eloul, then walk north to learn about the famous John B. Parkin Associates office and the story of 50 Park Rd. From there, a walk south will take walkers to the Toronto Reference Library and Raymond Moriyama. A walk along Toronto's "Mink Mile" will turn up stories on the University Theatre, the Colonnade, and Peter Dickinson's now-destroyed Park Plaza Hotel addition. The walk will then hit the corner of Bloor St. W. and St. George, where there's another Moriyama, head over to see Rochdale College, and a walk north along St. George will uncover the Modernist apartment buildings that went up in the 1950s. Heading back east, Irma will discuss the first "Bay-n-Gable" (and explain what it is), and end with the groovy story of the hippies of Yorkville. Just before the tour ends at the 1988 PoMo clock sculpture near Yonge & Bloor, there will be a pint pit-stop at the famous Pilot Tavern. Irma promises plenty of sass and architectural gossip, but most of it will be about dead architects who can no longer fight back or sue her. While Irma will be wearing heels, she encourages walkers to wear comfortable shoes for the tour. UPTOWN & HIPPIES WALKING TOUR IS THE LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH
